Green trail trek Donigal to yadakumeri

Previous

I and few of my friends did a trek on the Green Track from Donigal to Yadakumeri. The initial plan is
Friday: leave Bangalore by 10;30 to Sakleshpura

Saturday: Reach Sakleshpura before dawn, park the bikes in the hotel, fresh up and leave to Donigal for the trek. Trek all day and reach Yadakumeri by 5 and then leave to Kukke for the night.(there is a error in this plan, which costed us ditching the Sunday's plan )

Sunday: Leave early to Kumara Parvatha, trek as far as possible, come back to Sakleshpura, take the bikes and leave to Bangalore.

Friday:
As planned we got ready by 10pm and by that time the rain goods were almost done with their job. Meet the fellows at the Shell petrol bunk, then had dinner in a near by dabba and we were good to go.

We had a butt break in the Cafe Coffee day along the Hasson route aroud 1:30.

We then moved forward maintaining some good speeds, Crossed hasson around 4 and continued to Sakleshpur. Some 12 kms nefore Sakleshpur was ghats and it was misty. I was felling a bit sleepy and say after 3r4 hard corners I felt my head is not steady so took the turns smoothly. We reached the hotel by 5:30, parked the bikes. Some guys took bath and others took a quick nap. We left the Hotel by 7, a tempo agreed to give a lift upto the Donigal Station.

Enroute we had break fast. We also packed some idlies and Rice, another blunder.

Some Loading and unloading ;)

We reached Donigal Railway station around 8:30am

We reached Donigal by 8:30. While I walked from the road to Railway station, I could release my mistake of carrying the Tank bag along. The tank bag doesnt have the back bag strips, so had to wear it along the neck and it was hurting the neck and moved all around as I walked

The Milestone near Donigal showed 50km and the trek is a good 18km stretch on the Railway Track.

Some Flowers enroute

The weather around was cool and foggy. But we had a fear that if sun starts beating then it will suck our energy as in GluconD adv ;)

Around 9:30 we have covered some 2.5 kms, good progress :)
Rail puchi(millipede) in the Railway track

The first Bridge we crossed, some consruction work was going on below.

and Immediately after crossing the bridge we encountered the first train enroute. Its always safe to move away from the track and cling to a wall when the train comes. :)

The weather around was pleasant with the sun threatening peek up behind the clouds and beat us down any time. Milestones passed easily, the landscape around was too good. by 11:30 am we have covered around 6 kms. And it was time for a snacks break. We gulped some red bulls, tropicanas, chappathis and some buns that I had carried from home. Uff the tank bag is a bit lighter with just 2 red bulls, 1L water and 1L juice.

Around 12:30 we took another break and this time we ve covered 7 kms and some good 11 kms left.

And its time for some possings

and here comes a train... ;)

As time passed, the miles passed so did the mist and fog around us. It was slowly becoming bright and hot and our shirt became wet. slowly the bags around my neck had made a mark. A dip in the water was very much needed. and then we saw this...

and started posing ;)

These posing gave us a nice break and then we carried forward. We passed through a tunnel and there was a bridge on the other side. It was very beautiful with a stream flowing below it.

After this bridge there was a steep path that will take us to the stream. we readily climbed down that and made it our lunch destination. First we took a nice bath. Its been quite some time since I took a bath in a stream.(May be last was Pangong Tso). The water was a cooler and it took saw all the sweat.

After a good 15 min bath we gathered around for food. To our Dismay, the rice has become sore ;( luckily we had some idilies 1 per head and climbed up to continue the trek. The time is 2 and we have 8 more kms left. After this there were a lot of small bridges and tunnels. The tunnel number 11 was the longest with 575m.

And slowly by 5 pm we crept towards the yadakumeri.

And there we got a shock. The place is not connected by roads. Just one train stops in that station and that comes at 4:30am. Which means we should sleep in the platform for the night. To reach a road, one has to trek 4 kms on path that the jungle elephants take or a path that is very narrow that the will lead to a nearby village. There were another 3 guys how took the elephant route and returned back after 2.5 hrs. They lost the route.

So we decided to take the jungle route, which proved to be a BIGGGG mistake.

After discussion for a few minutes, we decided to try the other route, which is supposed to be narrow but short by 3 kms. We trekked again on the track for another 1/2 kms and took a narrow path that goes into the jungle. The time was 5:45 and we didnt note that!

After just a few meters, the got the real taste of the jungle.

Immediately after this, there were some split decisions among the gang. Some wanted to continue and some wanted to return. But we still moved ahead.
The path vanished at some places and many places it looked like a path of the rain water and its been never used.

Now the Blood suckers started in full flow. Once we checked the shoes, and there were 5 to 9 leaches all over. I took one from my hair.

as you can see the group is moving forward, and we were running out of time. I too cant afford to be lagging behind. So no time can be spent in pics. The tank bag on one shoulder, the cam bag on the other shoulder, it was diffficult to climb on roots and rocks, as the bags swings. I grabbed them on both my hands and ran to join the group. Slowly one by one was feeling like turning back.

At times we would here sounds of vehicles, but later we came to knwo that they were bees buzzing around.

Around 7 it became completely dark, but we could no see the top of the hill which is say another 1/2 half up. The path became steep and dark. Then we saw 2 big, really BIG beehives, hanging right om the trek route. We cant afford taking the risk of passing arounf them, because is we distrub a single branch in that tree, then we would be dead. Already the blood sucker are in full swing sucking beneath the socks and shoes.

The unanimous decision was made to return. Now we need to use the torches. Climbing down was no easy, the rocks with algae where very slippery and few fell down too. Luckily no major cramps.

by 8 we reached the tracks. As I took a forst few steps on the rail. I would feel leaches bursting below my shoes. Stopped for a second and plucked a few. but many were left. Through the next 1/2 kms we made sure that we didnt take the eyes off the track, a slip on the rail now will hirt us more.

by 8:30 we reached the platform, every one removed the socks and threw is away. Stripped the T-shorts and Pants and started plucking the leaches. The Railway workers helped with some salt to kill the leaches. This is to make sure that the leaches dont cling to them later.

Looking at our condition they offered us some rice and tomato gravy. we mixed to together and ate it. We forced Rs500 to the 12 year old kid who made us the food. We were told that around 11:30 a engine will pass by and the workers have requested the station master to make it stop by so the workers can move. They said they can take us too. We were more than happy slept there in the platform.

Around 11 they woke us up and asked us to come with them. Now we noticed the 2 of our guys ve developed blistes on their legs. We helped walk to the spot. Then arounf 11:45 the train came but it failed to stop. With much disaapointment and very less energy, we walked back. The next train is at 4:30, the mangalore express that will stop at Kukke.

Around 4 the station master woke us up. we moved to the other side. This time the train stopped and got into the small connecting space between the engine and the other compartments. There were 20 ppl in that small place.

The Train reached Kukke at 5:30 am. We took the jeep to the bus station. Had food at the hotel. The next bus to Sakleshpur was at 7 and the time was just 6. After a few discussion we decided to take a jeep back. This is save us 1 hr and Also the jeep will be much faster than the bus. we reached the Saklespura hotel by 9. Checked for more leaches.

we then Gulped a quarter of wisky and had a sound sleep.
We woke up by 3:30, refreshed up and drove back to bangalore
